Intaglio Printing:
The intaglio printing process uses a metal plate that has had the image cut into the surface. The sunken image is filled with ink and the surface is wiped clean so only ink is left in the sunken image areas. It is a very specialized process that gives a document a very high quality look. Intaglio is an old printing process but is still used today as one of the best security features on valuable documents.
Laminate:
A plastic film enclosing the license or document that may include security features.
Microline Printing:
Words are printed so small that they appear as a line to the naked eye. Only when magnified do the microline printed words become visible, making it extremely difficult to duplicate with a copier or scanner.
Optical Variable Device:
A security feature that changes color or shape when tilted.
Rainbow Printing:
A printing technique that uses different ink colors are put next to each other in the same ink fountain. The oscillating ink rollers cause the colors to combine where they touch and this produces a rainbow effect.
Stitching and Binding:
The binding of soft covers are sewn onto the pages of a book rather than with the use of adhesive or wire binding.
UV Invisible Fluorescent Ink Features:
UV invisible fluorescent ink is transparent white or colorless and can only be detected under ultraviolet light.
Watermarks:
A translucent image created in the paper on the paper machine, with the use of a dandy roller. The image is generally the name of the paper, company logo, or a government logo and can be viewed from both sides of the paper. Also referred to as a genuine watermark.
Wet Seals:
A seal that is applied to the paper or laminate that is usually a wet ink.
